Libong Nature Beach Resort - Once a sacred site for chow lair shaman, this property is owned and run by the Lifelong Learning Foundation and managed by resident international volunteers. Bunk in one of the dozen cottages set on a palm-shaded lawn that rolls to the best beach on the island. It runs excellent sea-kayaking tours of the mangroves and to the sea-grass mounds to spot dugongs.

By far the best of the island’s resorts is Libong Nature Beach Resort which is run by the same charitable foundation that operates the Haadyao Nature Resort. Its neat, en-suite Bungalows all with wi-fi stretch back from a secluded part of the beach, a 10 minute walk south of Ban Lan Khao, and there’s another sheltered cove a further 5 minutes walks (or kayak) to the South. There’s a good restaurant attached too, where mountain bikes and snorkeling gear are available to rent.

As well as tours of local islands, Libong Nature Beach Resort runs award winning day long boat trips around Libong itself which are safe, insured and licensed with the Tourism Authority of Thailand and staffed by local sea gypsies who know the dugong well. As well as visiting a chao ley village, these give you the chance to kayak into the sanctuary to observe the rare birds and to snorkel at the sea grass beds – which they reckon an 80% chance of seeing a dugong.

Guided/ unguided treks into the National Park jungle behind the resort includes a three hour walk to a good view point on the south western end of the island.

We had a wonderful stay here. Everyone is fabulous and very helpful and attentive with our children and activities. We paddles on a kayak for an afternoon and feast on the fresh fish. We will go to the Emerald Cave today.

Although we only stayed here one night, me and my brother had a great time. We rented mountain bikes and headed out to explore the island. The bikes were in great condition and have us no problems at all. I definitely recommend this as a way to see the island. Finally, we found the relaxed atmosphere we looked for in Thailand. The dedicated professor provided us with great information and the girls were very cute and nice with our 4 year old boy. We saw two dolphins and sea snake! We loved the small kittens and found them every time the mother tried to hide them. Last but not least, the sizzling garlic and black pepper barracuda – yum, yum! Also spotted a live barracuda snorkeling but did not manage to catch it with the fishing rod. All in all we had a GREAT time here at Nature Resort.

Koh Libong. A beautiful pearl amongst many islands. We experienced a great tour with Dugongs-Dolphons-mangroves- migrating birds etc. Add to this a very helpful staff. Both the young volunteers and the sea gypsy family. It is indeed a nice relaxing atmosphere – like a sanctuary.

This place sure beat our expectation! Staff was friendly and very helpful. Food was excellent – fritters is a favourite. “Hunting” crabs at night was fun. This was the best part of our stay! Bird Island was lovely too. Bicycling around the inland (although we did not go all the way around) was tough and very hot! Good thing we had a lot of water with us. The birds on the lawn have many voices and the monkeys invisible. Thank you for a lovely stay!

This is a nice little rustic place. We had fun paddling past the nice beaches (in Kayaks). The staff here are very friendly. particularly 'Nook' (not sure of the spelling). Nice food also.

A Nice Quiet Place!

Nice quiet place on a nice beautiful beach. What's better than being in your hammock with a book and looking at the beach with no other people in it. We stayed here for 5 days and had a great time also because of the friendly staff working here.

If you walk around you can see many different species (on land and the sea). Its cool to check the books over here as well.

A Pleasant Surprise!

We came here with the longtail boat and had no idea what to expect. This was a surprise. We was supposed to stay only one night and continue the adventure the next day. In the morning we decided to see the island with the bicycles.

The day was great and we wanted to stay another night. We had also a little snorkelling and the local football match had exciting feeling.

And then again we had a very good service and food. Thanks for everybody in this village. We might see you again.

Introduction.

Hello. I am the current resident manager of the Libong Nature Beach Resort and I must say, the comments made on your blog are very one-sided, and for those who have actually stayed at our resort and didn't like it, perhaps it was unfortunate for you that we didn't actually meet so I could explain the situation to you.

Mission

As you know, our resorts are managed by the Lifelong Learning Foundation whichour main goals are to support community development and educational programs inThailand. If you are looking for proof of this, you can click on our foundation'swebsite http://www.lifelong-learning.org to see what community projects we areinvolved in.

Tours and Transfers

Pertaining to the cost of our boat tours and transfers, you must realize that our resort does not even own a boat, as such we select only the local fisherman boats,and 70 percent of the cost that you pay goes to the local fisherman directly.You may ask where the remaining 30 % goes. As you know, being a Legally RegisteredFoundation, we must abide by all the laws that are required of us. We are alegally licensed registered tour operator, under the Tourism Authority of Thailand and are legally bound by all our actions. This means, an insurance policy which benefits guests who face misfortune on any of our tours or boat charters.

Then how does the Resort make money to finance these community projects? Well, we rent our our kayaks, snorkelling equipments, lifejackets, meals, etc. plus we have to pay the staff to prepare and support the boatman. Don't forget, wehave to feed the boatman and the guide as well, and provide to administrative support ie. information about tours etc. and that has a cost as well. I think that that is enough to justify the 30 %. We provide INSURANCE and all farangs know that Insurance is not free, there is always a cost involved. If there is a problem, we have to be responsible, other people can always runaway but notus.

Cost of Food

Some say that our food is expensive, that is until they see the portions we give, our portions can feed at least 3 thai people. You just haven't given us a chance yet, and take us at face value.
Most of our food supplies are from the village, unlike most resorts who buy theirsupplies from Superstores such as Makro with low prices, our food actually costs more because we buy it from the local village, therefore supporting their small economy.

We have also compared our prices to the other resorts and to say that we a double the price is an unfair statement. One such comparison is their American Breakfastwhich costs 80 baht, but consists of 1 fried egg and 2 slices of toast.our American Breakfast costs 200 baht but you get 2 fried eggs, 2 slices of toast,some fried seafood, several slices of fresh fruit, a glass of orange juice, andcoffee/tea. So please, don't take everything at face value but look into detail.

Other Community Services

To promote the usage of bicycles on the island, our foundation has donated overa dozen bicycles to the children in the village nearby, plus we have ensured that all the staff at the resort uses bicycles in their daily activities by sponsoring the bicycles.

We have also had community workshop trainings to train the local rural people inthe art of batik painting, so that during the low season when they are not tapping rubber, they can have a source of income during that time.

Our resort also grows a number of organic vegetables such as morning glory, lemongrass, basil, chilis, and we have never sold it to the village people. If theyask, they can have it, and in return for our kindness, we are blessed with fresh fruit or vegetables from their own garden. Kindness is not forced, but natural.

Respect and support for the Local Community.

Our resort is based on an island where the population is 100 % muslim, therefore we do not serve pork or cook pork in our restaurant. I cannot say the same forother resorts around. Also we do not have any dogs in our resort, although we do have alot of cats. As you know dog saliva is taboo for muslims. Also note that all the staff at the resort are natives from the island, the only person except me.

Nature Preservation.

When we send back our glass bottles back to Trang for recycling using the boats the guests charter to and from the island, it should not be a crime. Guests should not complain when we are sending supplies over, we are not overcrowding the boat, it is an everyday occurence. If you say the resort should pay for the extra space that we use for the boat, please note that we already pay the boatman EXTRA sothat he can LOAD and UNLOAD the boat as well, and that is not included in theboat price the guests have to pay.

People say we're crazy to send our bottles back to the mainland for recycling,in fact I've been to several islands where they just pile the bottles up and itis disgusting, even in some of the resorts. People laugh when I carry bags of broken glass back to the mainland, even at our campsite in Koh Mook.If you go to Koh Mook and ask whether there is a crazy guy carrying sacks ofbroken glass and the ferry boat, they would point to me.

I'm not a fanatic, but I do what I think is best, for the resort and the environment and is most people appreciate it, that the battle is won. I am rather dissappointed and sorry that some of the comments made on Tezzas website and other travel websiteshave been very harsh. Hopefully we can meet in person one of these days at eitherHaadyao Nature Resort or Libong Nature Beach Resort.

But I must admit, our staff is not the greatest at english, however this is howwars are started, because of the language barrier, you cannot blame someone ifthey do not know what is going. And sometimes, it is just plain bad luck if someone is bulldozing land somewhere nearby, which is an extremely rare one time occurence.

PS. It is simply amazing how much energy is used for make negative comments, when less energy can be used to make for fruitful and beneficial comments to help the tourism industry in thailand. As the saying goes, if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all. You think you may be doing a great service by warning people to avoid certain place, but you should at least hear both sides of the story. To me, it would be a fair way.

DUGONG TRACKING by Henrik

To my opinion, Dugongs are among the most lovely marine mammals. They seem so friendly, sympathetic, quiet, harmless – and extremely vulnerable. They used to be quite numerous in these waters, feeding on the extensive sea grass belts occurring between here, Ko Muk, and particularly between Ko Libong and the mainland. Their numbers here in a few years have dropped from hundreds to a dozen. They are subject to a variety of threats – being trapped in fishermen nets, having their only food source (the sea grass beds) being demolished and probably also impact from pollution, disturbed by long tail boats and maybe even hunted.

Preserving them for future generations seems close to a mission impossible and it is imperative to draw attention to this situation. The Dugong Tracking offered by the Nature Resort provides and excellent opportunity. Give it a try!!

How to do? Patience is the main tool. The long tail boat will take you to one of the areas, where Dugongs spend their time feeding. If they are around, chances are that you will see or hear them, when they surface for breathing. As they move slowly around, it may require more than one hour of drifting around, eventually paddling a bit, before you come across them. Most will put their odds at not seeing them, but if you come across a mother Dugong with her calf, you will have a life-time experience.

I will recommend that you start paddling towards the small island south of Ko Libong, in order to take a view of the birds (mostly waders like Curlew, Greenshank, Sand Plover, but close to the rare Crab Plover can be found) and see how they seek to the trees during high tide. Consider that they have to go to Northern Siberia in a short while.

20-30 Dolphins leaping into the air!

Took a great tour of Libong Island, saw Dolphins just along the east shore after leaving the harbour. 20-30 leaping into the air! Our older guide said that he saw a Dugong diving under the boat. The Libong Nature Beach Resort is really beautiful with clear waters and lots of fish. I saw a big grouper and some barracuda on the small reef. The muslim fishing village is interesting - the kids are very fun. Saw some beautiful rust-red winged eagles at the bird sanctuary, otherwise just plovers. Very nicely run trip - boat had a muffler!
